The Research Programme of Inductive Metaphysics from Gustav Theodor Fechner to Erich Becher and beyond
PI: Prof. Dr. Oliver R. Scholz (Münster)
Dr. Ansgar Seide (Münster)
Project A1 “The Research Programme of Inductive Metaphysics from Gustav Theodor Fechner to Erich Becher and beyond” is an attempt to reconstruct the research programme of Inductive Metaphysics as it emerged in the 19th century (though more or less tacit predecessors can be found in earlier periods of the history of philosophy). A1 combines historical with systematic aims and methods.
The historical focus is on the period from mid and late 19th century (Schopenhauer, Fechner, Lotze, von Hartmann, and others) to early 20th century (Külpe, Becher, Wenzl, and others). The primary aim is not to re-tell the heterogeneous and sometimes problematic metaphysical theories of these philosophers and philosopher-scientists, but to reconstruct from the relevant sources what is common to their metaphysical projects and programmes.
The systematic focus is on the scientific goals of Inductive Metaphysics, its background epistemology and especially the methods and inference patterns applied.
